What is bladder pain? Where is it felt? Why does it happen? Detailed information about the causes, symptoms and how it will pass

Bladder pain is discomfort or pain felt in the pelvic area, especially in the area where the bladder is located. This pain can range from mild to severe and is often a symptom of an underlying health problem. Bladder pain may be permanent in some cases, or it may be felt as a temporary discomfort that occurs during urination. Other common symptoms that accompany bladder pain include frequent urination, a burning or painful sensation while urinating, cloudy or bloody urine, and lack of urine when you feel the need to urinate.

Where is Bladder Pain Felt?

Bladder pain is usually felt in the lower part of the pelvic area, especially in the lower abdomen. This pain occurs directly in the area where the bladder is located and can sometimes radiate towards the groin or lower back. The location and severity of pain may vary from person to person and may be felt differently depending on the underlying causes. Bladder pain may become more noticeable when feeling the need to urinate, during or after urinating.

What Causes Bladder Pain in Men and Women?

  1. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): It is one of the most common causes in both men and women. It occurs as a result of bacteria entering the urinary system and multiplying.
  2. Interstitial Cystitis (Painful Bladder Syndrome): It is a condition of chronic inflammation of the bladder and is seen especially in women, but can also affect men.
  3. Stones (Kidney Stones or Bladder Stones): They are formed by the accumulation of crystals in the urinary system and can cause pain.
  4. Bladder Cancer: Although a less common cause, bladder cancer can also cause pain.
  5. Urinary Retention: Abnormal accumulation of urine in the bladder, usually due to obstruction, may be associated with prostate enlargement, especially in men.
  6. Complications after Radiation Therapy or Surgery: Pain may occur after treatments performed in the urinary system.
  7. Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome: The condition, also known as prostatitis in men, can cause long-term pain in the pelvic area.

Bladder Pain Symptoms

  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Burning or pain when urinating
  • Constant pain in the pelvic area
  • Cloudy or foul-smelling urine
  • Painful or intermittent urine flow during urination

How to Relieve Bladder Pain?

Treatment of bladder pain depends on its underlying cause:

  1. Antibiotics: Antibiotic treatment is usually required for Urinary Tract Infections (UTI).
  2. Pain Management: Pain relievers can help relieve bladder pain.
  3. Drinking Water: Drinking plenty of water can help clear the system of bacteria in case of urinary tract infections.
  4. Dietary Changes: Reducing the consumption of acidic foods may be beneficial in case of interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome).
  5. Physical Therapy: Physical therapy techniques can be applied for pelvic pain and discomfort.
  6. Procedures and Surgery: Physical obstructions such as bladder stones or a large prostate may need to be removed.

If you are experiencing bladder pain, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment. Treatment will provide the most effective results by addressing the underlying cause of the pain.
